I don't see a command that displays the magit version. magit keeps
getting better and I do a 'git pull' to get the latest. But I have no
way of knowing if I am using the latest. I don't want to exit emacs
and restart it. Would it be possible to put the first 4 or 6
characters of the commit id in the minibuffer like "*magit-6838ae:
proj*", if magit finds a .git in the same directory as magit.el? When
users get magit from elpa it can show "magit-0.8:".

To avoid cluttering up the minibuffer, this can be turned off by
setting a variable.

BTW, the speed of magit has improved considerably and it is a pleasure
to use. Thanks.

And thanks for fixing all the issues I reported so far.
