FWIW, I ran into a similar issue WRT git-svn integration. I poked around a
bit on the git side, and was informed that the opinion of the git developers
was that magit was using the user-focused rather than tool-focused interface.
So, their suggested fix for more or less this problem was to use git show-ref
directly, rather than the user-focused version.
I never got around to patching it, though, since it isn't a terribly
significant issue for me. Lazy, I know. Sorry.
