It makes no assumptions, that's part of the problem. Is it John's message that's displayed to you? I don't really want a load of logic around that message (and trust me, I've spent enough time on the bloody thing already) so I could just make the last line of the key buffer a blank one or perhaps even put the message in the key buffer itself somewhere.
