Hi I'm pretty new to git even newer to magit,

From the manual (info magit -> history(7)) I understood that I can
display the history buff by l - L which works fine,
than the manual states:

which i interpret as: switch to the newly created log buffer, move the
cursor to a commit identifier (sha-1 hash) and type one of the keys
below. However typing return gives an emacs warning: "nothing to visit
here".
Where do I go wrong?

You're doing no wrong. This is a long standing Magit bug which screws up long log for people. I'm sure someone sent me a patch last week while I was snowboarding, but I can't find it. Will keep looking...
