This is a good idea, but I wonder if we can consder a longer term solution. One that allows more git actions to be performed from ediff than just staging. === One problem with this idea is that it will only work for cases where you have both of the files being diffed available. If, instead, ediff could remote control git by passing along the staging command per hunk, this would allow other software to use ediff. And we can also do other things.
