Do you have git version older than 1.7.2? This sounds similar to

Yes, my git version is 1.7.1 which is the latest available for CentOS 6.5
which in turn is the latest available CentOS version.
Most likely 1.7.1 is the latest version available for all RHEL derived
Linuxes. So I'd expect all users of magit and a RHEL derivate to run into this
sooner or later. :-/
I just had a try with the latest version from RPMForge (1.7.11) and this fixed
the problem.
