Yes, we use Git for code management, but you won't be able to commit directly to it and thus would not have to fear of messing anything up. :-) All code that is proposed for the main repository goes through a peer review first. We use Gerrit for that http://reviews.mahara.org . You can find instructions on how to get ready for Gerrit at https://wiki.mahara.org/index.php/Developer_Area/Contributing_Code You would create a branch which has your changes and push that to Gerrit. Then when all is well, it is merged or sometimes you might have to fix a couple of things before it is being merged. You should always work against the master code.
