Ah, yes, having a huge number of students in the forum could indeed cause slowdown when you do a post, especially if you've got your "Post delay" set to 0. You can check that by going to Administration -> Extensions -> interaction:forum.
If your Post delay is 0, try setting it to a higher amount. That'll make it so that the notifications are sent out by the cron instead, and it should run much faster.
