Ah it turns out that the plugin 'multirecipientnotification' inculdes
lib/group.php as part of it's code and on my site that plugin was
disabled. Once I enabled it again things work as expected

And also
PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function group_current_group() in
/../htdocs/collection/edit.php on line 53, referer:
https://mydomain/collection/index.php?group=37
This works fine on a site without cleanurls
