Yeah, that should work. The "Phar" library ships with standard PHP. Although it's mainly written for the purpose of handling executable PHP archives (.phar files, which are like the PHP equivalent of Java's .jar files), but since the phar format is compressed, it also includes functions for doing plain compression and decompression.
