This turns out to be a bit more complex than upon quick reading. There is no clear distinction between alt text and image caption and we seem to be wanting to use the description field that is in the 'Files' area for both of these two things. However, these two can diverge and at times maybe even should diverge because the alt text is to describe the image, e.g. 'Two women dressed in warm jackets walk along a deserted beach', whereas the caption puts the image into the context of the surrounding text, e.g. 'Sandy and Mel discuss their latest project while out and about'.
Currently, the description is used both for alt text and caption when an image is added in the 'Image' block. It is updated automatically when the description is changed for the file. The description is not pulled into a text block when the image is added via TinyMCE. The questions that are open right now as far as I can see are the following, also taking WCAG 2.1 into consideration before thinking about how to solve that technically: 1. Should alt text and caption always be the same or should they be able to diverge? 2. Do we need a title tag for images besides alt text and caption or is the title tag essentially the caption? 3. Do we want the alt text to be able to be changed depending on where the image is displayed or should the alt text always be the same? 4. Do we want to be able to display a different caption for an image when it is displayed in pages? Scope limitation: for when an image is embedded in text, but not when it's used in an 'Image' or 'Image gallery' block. 5. Should a portfolio author be able to decide whether to display alt text? 6.
