It should be really simply now that MathJax project offers a hosted version of the library. In fact that's the way they recommend to integrate it now (see http://www.mathjax.org/docs/1.1/platforms/index.html).
As I say in http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=3759#post16560 we only need to add single line in lib/web.php to make it work. I've tested it locally and works as expected (as long as you have access to that URL, of course). Saludos.
