I would not add an additional navigation item that performs the same functionality as export. In the themes it is possible to add icons for each navigation item. I would not rely too much on graphics though as they can be interpreted differently and there are usually no universally used ones.

The reason is users do not often use the export option to backup their eporfolios. If something goes wrong with an individual eportfolio it is very difficult to recover an individual users portfolio without the export option to back up their portfolio being used. It might even be good ides to have a graphic of a disk and the words backup.
