M on Unix is fine for me because I can use fetchmail to get the mail and
then M is just the front-end. However under Windoze I must use M to get
the email as well and I found I cannot do this for the pop client that my
ISP has. This is because it speaks FTGate which causes a problem for M.
Fetchmail knows about FTGate and works around it. Is there any way that M
can be configured to work around the FTGate problem?

When M connects to an FTGate pop server you get the errors below
(ns.zylem.com is the pop3 server):

Error: Mail log: SMTP authenitcation not available: ns.zylem.com
Error: Cannot open connection to the server 'ns.zylem.com'
Error: The message couldn't be sent

When you telnet to the SMTP port you get:

220 WITHELD FTGate server ready - Zylem Limited

I suspect it is the WITHELD response that causes the problem.

It might be worth the M developers looking at how fetchmail is configured
because it can deal with a huge number of problematic or non-RFC
conforming mail servers.

Regards,

Andrew Marlow.
