Hi, I just joined this list (been on mahogany-users for a while). I
was looking through the list archives and I saw this recent discussion
about the threading/sorting business.

I'd just like to say that I'd prefer threading not be turned off when
sorting, unless I'm misunderstanding. Does this mean there'd be no
way to sort threads as units, you'd only be able to sort individual
messages? This would not be good.

I support the original suggestion of deciding the sort order of a
thread based on the single message in the thread which would go
closest to the top of the list. As for the objection that new incoming
mails would then screw up the sort order, how about this: is it possible
to make the sorting a static thing rather than having it constantly
watch for new messages to sort? That is, have sorting only take place
in response to an explicit click on a sort button (or when the folder is
first opened). When you click the column headers to sort by date or
size or whatever, it should just sort the messages that are in the list
and display that sorted list. If new messages come in, they can just get
added to the bottom of the list, out of thread and sort order; if anyone
wants to get the new messages put into the order, they can just click
the sorting tab twice to resort the list in the same order. I doubt it will
be very common for a new message to drastically affect the sort order
like this, and if it does, the "messages" indicator in the folder tree
should reflect the delivery. You'll know there's a new message, and
you can just re-sort the list to bring into order.
