Fascinating.

Try just moving to another folder after hitting Expunge. I have my deleted
messages moved to trash. I just moved over to my trash folder and deleted
them again (they get marked since they can't move). Then I expunged. The
message count in the folder list window stayed at 16. I could click on
different lines in the message list pane and the highlight bar moved as if
there were messages there aven though all of the message info was gone
(looked like a blank pane). Double clicking as if I were selecting a
message to open in a new window would actually open a new, empty,
read-message window.

As soon as I selected another folder to browse the message count corrected
itself and when I went back to trash it was empty as it should be. It never
crashed. I only waited a minute or two though.

I've never had a crash if new mail arrives when I am in a folder reading
other mail (folder open). New mail comes in, I get an hourglass while the
folder reindexes, then a sound indicating new mail in the folder.

Perhaps it depends on the IMAP server. I connect to a Courier-IMAP server
using server-side sorting and threading.
