I will check with Gnome here. Pasting with middle click works here of course (in Gnome), so it should work on your system too (it was a stupid guess...). So I can only assume it's your Firefox configuration. http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/mouse : A Middle-click on a tab closes it on Windows by default. However, in Linux it pastes whatever is currently in the Clipboard and visits that site (or performs a search). This can be changed by setting the middlemouse.contentLoadURL pref to either true (for the Content Load URL feature) or false (for closing the tab). My middlemouse.contentLoadURL is true (default). What is yours (you can see it in about:config)? Does middle click on a tab open an URL from clipboard? It does here. Does middle click anywhere in a page open an URL from clipboard? It does here.
