 No, I don't think it's this: rather there must be an error in DDE
communications between Mahogany and Acrobat. Could you please:

1. run regedit
2. look under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf
3. follow to the string in the (unnamed) value of this key, i.e. here
   it is AcroExch.Document
4. describe what do you have under HKCR\AcroExch.Document\shell\open

 No, you didn't but I simply didn't know what to say about it as I don't
have Acrobat 5. With the additional information it's clear that the problem
is related to the DDE so I might at least be able to formulate some
hypotheses.
