 It has never been global, in fact, but setting it from the UI was tricky.
I thought it would be better now but judging from your message is still not
ideal :-(

 You certianly don't have to do this. There are 2 ways to set the global
columns widths:

1. Do "Edit|Preferences...", go to the "Folder View" page and select the
   "Edit columns" button, then enter the widths in pixels there

2. Much more user friendly way: drag the columns in any folder to the
   poistions you like, then right click the header, choose "Columns..."
   and check the "Save as default" in the resulting dialog - now the same
   widths will be used for all the other folders (except those for which
   you configure the widths differently epxlicitly, of course)

 This is really mysterious as I ran the binary you must be using (which
one, debug or release? anyhow, I tested both) and saw it there. Did you
scroll down, maybe it's simply hidden?
