Just changing the mailto: class (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto\) was sufficient to get MSIE to use Mahogany for links with a mailto: protocol indicator. I suspect HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\ has more effect on MS Office applications than on MSIE though it does appear to control which programs are called from MSIE's Tools menu. On my system, Gravity has insinuated itself into this heirarchy.
