Normally the same [as for the other network operations] timeout is used. But it's not impossible that it tries to connect to the server thrice -- and it will also surely try all IP addresses of the server (and many SMTP servers have several of those). In any case, there is hardly anything you can do about it except reducing timeout. I'll look at the code to see if it does anything stupid there.
