This is probably a more tidy solution but I was lazy and just changed the
file names to include the user name, i.e. now I have

% ll /tmp/.m*
srwx------ 1 zeitlin etudiant 0 Jul 4 16:24 /tmp/.mahogany-zeitlin.ipc
-rw------- 1 zeitlin etudiant 6 Jul 4 16:24 /tmp/.mahogany-zeitlin.lock

This should be ok for 2 files, of course if we start using more of them we
should create a separate directory.

Thanks again to Martin for reporting this (incredibly stupid @#%@#$) bug!
