 I can only see that it didn't find iconv_xxx() in libc, then it apparently
tried libiconv and succeeded.

 I'm completely lost by now, unfortunately, so I see only 2 possible
solutions:

a) quickest: if you can make a test account for me on your OpenBSD box
   I can try building M myself there and see what the problem is

b) realistic: make sure to delete *all* traces of M and wxWin libraries
   *and* headers from your system, download wxGTK 2.3.3 (should be out
   tomorrow or, in the worst case, the day after) and latest M from the
   cvs and build everything again
