 Indeed, this is the only explanation. You can also look in the about
dialog -- you should see the OpenSSL logo there if SSL support is present.

 It must have said that SSL headers or libraries were not found. The exact
reason for this can be determined from the (exact) error message configure
gave and the contents of config.log. Please have a look at them.
