Here is a core reason: Presumably a mouse user should get good functionality for the most performed actions, and the current behavior does not provide this. Btw, I used the icon because of a left hand injury. (Ordinarily I avoid the mouse.) So it gave me a taste of what a less keyboard oriented experience would be.
