Here is a core reason: Presumably a mouse user should get
good functionality for the most performed actions, and the
current behavior does not provide this.

Btw, I used the icon because of a left hand injury.
(Ordinarily I avoid the mouse.)  So it gave me a taste of
what a less keyboard oriented experience would be.

PS To avoid moving to the next msg, just hit the up-arrow right
after 'd'.
