The reason it moves the focus to the first message is that you can use the keys for incremental search: in the list control if you press some key it tries to find the first line starting with that letter. This could be useful in theory but OTOH we already take so many letters with the commands that it's probably not useful in practice. So would anyone miss it if I disable the incremental search completely? Alan, if nobody objects could you please open a (low priority) bug for this so that I don't forget it?
