IMAP is great, but it's really annoying having to maintain seperate address books. I believe that solving this issue will be important to the future of IMAP.
Are users expected to use LDAP servers for their address books? Would it be possible (in theory) to store, or mirror, your address book into folders (as outlook does) and then I could make these folders into IMAP folders so they get synchronized. My IMAP service provider (fastmail.fm) supports many formats for uploading addresses. If there was a format that was rich enough, and that was supported by other IMAP service providers, perhaps upload and download of addresses could be semi-automated within Mahogany? Here is FastMail's FAQ response on this topic: http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/faqparts/OtherPrefs.htm#AddressSync (I apologize if I've missed something related to this in Mahogany. I've only used it a little bit so far because I can't figure out how to import my existing messages. I'll create a seperate post about this problem.)
