 It should if you create it on the SentMail folder itself.

 However there is also an alternative solution: I don't know why do you
want to mark these mails as read but if it's just to prevent them from
showing up as red (with default colours anyhow) in the folder tree, you can
instead use one or both of the "don't show status in tree" and "parent
shows status" options in the folder tree page of the SentMail folder
properties to suppress this.

 I.e. I don't care about the number nor status of the SentMail folder and
so I simply configured it to not show it. Nevertheless, the mails inside
are still unread by default -- but why shouldn't they be?
