I guess the core question is: what should the default 
mailbox format be?  I do not pretend to know, but I have had 
two experiences that make me suspect MBOX is the right 
answer:
- I have had two time a problem with header corruption, and 
  there is no clear path to repair.  This is a bad 
  experience.
- "User friendly" tools for MBOX access appear to be 
  widespread, but not so for MBX.

Perhaps, at a minimum, such guidance could appear in the 
documents.
