Yes, the checkbox to allow only a single instance is 
checked.  And it is having an interesting but new effect.

Suppose I have one instance of M running and (with that box 
checked) I double click the M icon to potentially start 
another instance.  It used to be that I just got back my 
initial instance with no change in state.  Now it looks like 
a new instance is started: I get a new window, but the 
initialization does not complete.  Instead, I get an error:

    DDE execute request failed: a transaction failed.

Despite this, the new window appears to be a normally 
behaved instance of M, except perhaps for how it shares 
state ... ?  (I've been afraid to experiment.)

If I uncheck the box, then I get multiple instances as 
expected, with no failed transactions at initialization.
