I'm on that (Win 2000) computer less often now;
so my answer has been rather delayed.
As you correctly guessed, the registry key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf
did not have a "Content Type" string value.
No clue how that was lost; oh well, it was
easily restored.
