I was able to bring up a single note using a trunk checkout but was waiting for the recent 0.17 release so I could use the src/contrib/ec2 scripts without hacking them. Now there is a Hadoop 0.17 AMI and excellent how-to instructions on the wiki (http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/AmazonEC2). It will not contain Mahout, but it would be easy to do so: Just start their AMI, install Mahout, make sure you can run a single node example, save a new image and then use the scripts to launch it as a cluster.

The EC2 Getting Started Guide is also excellent, at (http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=1344&categoryID=87). It took me less than a day to get up and running. I'm working on my new website (on EC2) right now and have been a little distracted.

If the new image is saved in a public bucket then anybody can use it. I don't know how to do that part yet.

Jeff,

Did I see somewhere you have a Hadoop/Mahout image (or whatever it is) for Amazon? I'd like to try things out there.

Has anyone else run Mahout on Amazon?
