Just FYI (I have too much "experience" with this annoyance)
Java 6 was only available for a limited time for 10.4 for both PPC and
Intel. They pulled it sometime in the summer of 07, pre-Leopard. It is
still available around the net, just search for it-- it's a 55MB .dmg
file.
On 10.5 Java 6 is only available for 64-bit intel machines (Core 2 Duo
or better; anything bought in the last year should work.)
If you have a 32-bit intel machine you can use the open-source
SoyLatte distribution, but I haven't confirmed Hadoop is OK with that.
If you have a PPC machine on 10.5, you're just out of luck w/r/t java 6.
Also note that if you have installed the developer preview of Java 6
on 10.4 and then upgrade to 10.5 java will simply not work at all. You
need to uninstall it before upgrading.
