I think this will end up being like a dozen JIRA tickets eventually, but for
starters, on the topic of "clean" - the codestyle in the matrix package is
currently not our own, so reformatting should be done. More importantly, there
are still @author and @version tags in many (all?) of these fields. Even more
importantly, the javadocs which are embedded in the source tree have not been
refactored to refer to the correct class hierarchy.
