Just an FYI, I find it really helpful if patches are just named after the JIRA issue number and nothing else. Then, in JIRA, it will automatically gray out the old patches (see https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MAHOUT-163 for an example) and it is much easier to figure out what the latest patch is. Obviously not a requirement or a show stopper, but just a helpful thing to make it slightly easier to apply patches (also b/c JIRA seems to have some weird date sorting issues.)
