Worldwide Pantnagar Alumni Association (WPAA)
Monthly Newsletter, July 1, 2002
------------------------------------------------
Greetings !

The big news of last month was the appointment of Dr. P L Gautam as the new Vice
Chancellor of GBPUAT. Though we do not have any official details about Dr. Gautam's
academic background yet, we do have some information provided to us by Dr. Gajendra
Singh of AIT, Bangkok. Dr. Gautam, prior to joining as VC-GBPUAT, has served as:

- Professor in College of Agriculture, GBPUA&T, Pantnagar
- Dean, University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, Himachal Pradesh
- Director, National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), ICAR, New Delhi
- National Director, National Agricultural Technology Project(NATP), ICAR, New Delhi

WPAA would like to thank Dr. Singh for sharing this information.
We will keep you posted as and when we get any more details about Dr. Gautam.

Another very important event that took place was the Convocation Ceremony on June 29th
(assuming that it did take place as scheduled). As has been the general feeling that
the university could have done a much better job of communicating it to students and
alumni, giving them an opportunity to make necessary arrangements for attending the
same. In fact, there was no formal notification about the convocation whatsoever. If
it was not for Anurudh Gupta ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), none of us would have even
known about it.

IT SOMETIMES IS VERY HARD TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE UNIVERSITY WE ARE ALL SO PROUD OF AND
WANT DO SO MUCH FOR, CAN NOT EVEN FIND TIME TO INFORM ITS VERY OWN ALUMNI ABOUT SUCH
AN IMPORTANT EVENT ! Until a few years back, there was this evergreen excuse that the
university did not have the latest addresses of the alumni and so the mailers could
not be sent out in time or to correct addresses. But what is the excuse now ?
Low-bandwidth internet connection ? Come on ! How much of time and effort (and
bandwidth) would one need to send out a notice to a mailing list ?

Anyway, the convocation is over for this year but we hope that we will be much better
informed in coming years. One thing that GBPUAT has to understand and realize is that
its alumni are its treasure and they need to be treated with respect and dignity.
Unless that happens, it is going to be a long bumpy road ahead of all of us if we
really want to see GBPUAT achieve the status of one of the best universities in the
nation. I just hope that there are members from GBPUAT staff, faculty and
administration on this mailing list and are getting the message.

Moving on to other activities of WPAA last month, we are very pleased to announce that
we have a new chapter, WPAA - Manila. WPAA would like to congratulate Amaresh Chandel
for taking the initiative and welcome all the members of WPAA-Manila on board.

A sum of USD 3000 was collected for Computer Engineering Department, College of

delivered to the then Vice-Chancellor, Dr. J. B Chowdhury in Feb, 2002. Head of
Computer Engineering Department, Prof. R N Mishra later informed us via an email that
a decision had been made to purchase a LCD projector for the department.

WPAA would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed towards
this Fund Drive' and helped it make a success.

A beautiful district in Uttaranchal. Do you know which one ?
------------------------------------------------------------
- Submitted by Arvind Shakya on 04/09/2002: this beautiful place is BAGESHWAR
- Pradyuman Kumar on 06/23/2002 suggested that this picture is of Ranikhet district.

Well, thanks Pradyuman for your response but I'm afraid, it is not Ranikhet. It is not
Bageshwar either. Any one else wants to take a shot ? If we can not get the correct
response by next newsletter, we will give out the correct answer.

Tarun Sharma won the first quiz scoring 100%. There were 28 responses with an average

of 66.67%. Do you want to take a shot at it ? Check out http://www.wpaa.org/ for
