hello friends ..

how many of you have migrated a windows Domain to a linux one ? I need some
help on this ..

A typical windows domain would have a couple of authentication servers and
file/print servers plus application servers.
It will also have proxys and mail servers and probably some kind of
groupware and ofcourse a webserver.

Now if we decide on migrating the servers to Linux we definitly have to take
these into consideration.
Lets forget the application server for the time being. You know all the work
u have to do for portingsoemhting to *nix.

Now things are pretty easy if u have all the time u need and u have a lotta
people working on it. But what if the availability of the network is
critical, and u have to get it done over the weekend ?

Now we know that Samba can do a lotta work for you ( your workstations are
still on Windows). But how do you make sure all the users have an account on
the new server ? Even if you have just 200 users, you need to configure
their, access rights, groups, their accounts on the mail server, maybe
roaming profiles etc .. Now dont just sum it up with "samba can do it all ..
just make it ur PDC and add all the users and groups". Ofcourse thats right
but we wanna discuss the migration strategy which is foolproof. You know
that we can use scripts to add all the 200 users, but then how do u get
those info abt the 200 users out of the NT box? and in what format? and
whats the script like (ofcourse it appends to /etc/passwd but then ... i
need to knwo more abt it).

thankx ..

Roshin
