<P><B>West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corp Ltd (Webel), the
state's nodal IT body, has formed a Linux cell to support various government IT
projects in and outside the state. </B>
<P>The Linux cell has already submitted a report to the Webel management on the
future of Linux in the e-governance projects in the state at regional and local
level.
<P>The Linux cell's manager (IT) Tamal Sen told that a detailed roadmap
has been drawn showing various possibilities of using the free source code
operating system (OS) to support the state government's e-governance
initiatives. "Our understanding is that Linux, with its features and cost
effectiveness, has endless possibilities to be used as the OS at the base of
the
e-governance IT architecture. We also feel there is no need to associate with
any particular Linux flavour and we can use anything, for example from Red Hat,
SuSe or Caldera," said Sen.
<P>The strategy of Webel as the implementor of West Bengal government's
e-governance project is to safeguard the IT investment of the state.
<P>According to Webel's managing director SK Mitra, in the forthcoming
government investments, Webel can use Linux as the OS for various applications.
Also in case of applications developed on Windows or in any other platform, the
Linux cell will do the migration.
<P>"Our plan is to create a thin client environment backed by cost effective OS
at the server level to make the IT operation cost-effective. We will provide
the
Linux consultancy not only to the West Bengal government but to other states
like Jharkhand where we are working," said Mitra.
<P>Sources in government circles also believe that the use of Oracle in some
government departments like in treasury and commercial tax and the decision of
Webel to work closely with the database major has future ramifications.
<P>"Oracle's major share of revenue comes from e-governance projects as well as
porting the database application on Linux. When almost most of the major
government departments' computerisation architecture has not been decided,
Oracle-Linux combination can promote cost effective IT implementation," said
the
government sources.
<P>Oracle India Pvt Ltd also feels that for large government projects, Linux is
an attractive option.</P>
