Subject: [Mailinglist] Wake Up , ILUG Cochin !!!

Hello All

Its quite disappointing that theres not a good
response regarding the plan of Linux Expo even after
the special meeting . One week is over and there is
(almost) no response at all :(

Regarding the meeting day

It is true that sunday has got advantage as well as
disadvantage . Thats a good point to argue . I mean
sunday is not a workin day , so chances r there for
more people to come . But on the other hand people r
gettin only one day to spend with the family , attend
various functions etc , So why not all suggesting
another day ? We can go for the day where max people
can come .

Regarding the 'idle' status of mailing list

Whenever there is a distro war , people (no 1 example
- myself !!) start sending mails , things will get
heated up , whenever there is some issue regarding the
name of our group , whenever someone post something
that is not related to linux , people argue a lot in
the mailing list , we will get 10-20 mails a day !! We
need something to argue to make the list active LOL

Now why not making the mailing list active for some
good reasons ? There may be about 200 people ( or more
) in ilug as members . Does it mean that the benefits
of open source / linux / free software etc should not
reach out of the ilug ? If we are not doing anything
to spread the advantages / benefits of using open
source / linux / free software etc among the public ,
it is equivalent to encouraging non-free softwares .
It is our duty to make the public aware of the good
things . It is our duty to make them aware of the
dangers behind non-free softwares . In my opinion we
should move towards a free-world and not just a
free-ilug

And people not located in cochin or even not in Kerala
, u can also help the ilug-cochin . You can suggest a
lot , there may be people experienced in conducting
such things , there may be people well experienced in
lot linux applications . When you visit cochin you can
contact ilug , you can give valuable suggestions and
you can discuss things with people out here . All can
work together to make the Linux expo a reality . Of
course nobody can dedicate all their time to such
things . But we can make some teams and within the
team we can make flexible arrangement for timings etc
.

The main points discussed / decided were

1. Fund - money can buy most of the things ;)
2. Location - whether to conduct expo along with IT
expo or not
3. People - Setting up teams at various levels
4. Target - What should be included etc

There are lot other points which we can suggest and we
can go ahead with the nice ideas .

We can also contact other ilugs / similar groups .
There is nothing wrong in that . They may be able to
help us . I think we can contact people like Shanu (
who is active in conducting such things in B'lore ) .

The main thing behind targeting the common man ( in my
opinion ) is that they are not aware of things
available in linux / open source . They don't know
that ( almost ) all the applications we are running
using non-free softwares can be run in linux too ( of
course there are exceptions ) Like they don't know
that there is a nice office package that will do
everything as M$ office and it is FREE . They don't
know that there is free chat client that support yahoo
, msn , icq , aol that also at a time . So it will be
a great thing to make them all aware . I am sure that
more and more people will move towards a gnu/linux
world after the expo . More pcs will run on linux .

ILUG Cochin , wake up , act now . Do something great
for the people around us . Help them to get the best
things in life for FREE . Make the mailing list active
.

( sorry for all typos and grammar mistakes )

Best Regards
Din.
