ILUGCOCHIN met at 2:00pm at the Internet Club Broadway. The meeting was
kicked off with the Agenda, that was about the Government in the USA deciding
to use Linux in the Federal courts of the USA. A contract worth $ 9 million has
already been awarded to a consortium backed up by Redhat, RedFlag, Turbolinux,
Miracle Linux, Connectiva, Suse in conjunction with Bakbone software to form
what they call the Linux Advantage. Bakbone is engaged in the fast backup and
recovery of Linux systems and has a suite of applications for the purpose.
We can see that even the Big corporates who had earlier refused to join any
sort of consortium has now come into a grouping that has a big financial
advantage. This shows that the corporates are now taking up the responsibitly
of backing up the GNU/Linux Software. This may lead to a sidelining of the
community efforts and the communitys effort may decline over the years as it
has been from the onset of commercialisation of Linux.
Therefore members were of the general opinion that the community should also
take active part in such backup and recovery measures and must strive for
creating the infrastucture so that community development and involvement can be
accelerated and a community development center for Software and backup and
recovery be established at the soonest. Varoius suggestions as to how this
could be done were taken up, more suggestions are required.
The community should also be able to partake and share the fruits of
development and members encouraged ideas on how we would be able to attain the
goal of a community software development Center.
This was then followed by the 2nd part of the meeting, a demo was organised by
Mr Balakrishnan of Linix of Indian Bank, for Tex which could do the type
setting in Malayalam, this proved to be a very simple and effective tool which
many of our members were not aware of.
This ended the meeting for June.
