Fellow Linux Lovers

Some info abt the GPL License. I had misunderstood the GPL. Mostly due to my
own ignorance ..mostly due to the myths propagated by the ' YOU KNOW WHO'.
Anyway, my knowldge, as usual, is not complte. So if u hav anythin to add or
modfy..u r free to do so.( no license for mailin).I reffrd this book. i simply
luv it. Its ultra cool..and a must to read one.

BUILDING EMBEDDED LINUX SYSTEMS by KARIM YAGHMOUR.(o'reilly)
Plz refer page : 21-27.

I wish i cld reproduce the contents but o'reilly copyright rules. But heres wot
i undertood.Try to read the book....I hav tried to make this as small as
pssble. If more clarifications are needed, we cld discuss.

QN: If u use GPL tools to make ur own software, would u hav to put it under
the GPL too?

ans: NO...a BIG no.

        why? read on...

ref:1. BUILDING EMBEDDED LINUX SYSTEMS by KARIM YAGHMOUR (O'Reilly)
     2. www.gnu.org/licenses/

    To main licenses :
            1.GPL
            2.LGPL.

    To main isses:
            1. Running GPL Software
            2. Modifying GPL Software.

As long as ur just running the GPL software, u
r ok. The GPL rules apply only when u try to modify an existin GPL software.
For eg. gcc. GCC is provided under the GPL. As loong as u r just compiling ur
programs with gcc , u r safe. Ur programs need not be under GPL. But if u try
to modify gcc, to say..compile ur own lang, then u r under GPL laws.

Thers is thus a clear distinction between
running GPL software and modifying it. It is just simple pure LOGIC. wht GPL is
tryin to do is to protect the authors copyright while providing freedom of use.
So if u make ur programs using tools like gcc etc, as loong as ur just runnin
those tools, u r free to do whatevr u like. But if u try to take an existin GPL
tool and try to modify it and then sell it...u will have waste ur time in
court.

GPL doesnt allow u to include parts of the progm in
ur own, unles ur prog is distributed under GPL. But the LGPL ( mostly for
libraries) allows u to use UNMODIFIED portions of the LGPL programs in ur
progm. As loong as u dont modify any library, u r free to use tht too.

I SIMPLY LUV LINUX. NO WONDER ..LINUX GIVES U
ULTIMATE FREEDOM.

The issue is bit complictd whn considerin the
kernel. So linus added his own preamble to the kernel GPL license. Now you can
run any sort of application on the LINUX KERNEL without any fear of GPL. Thats
wot IBM,Oracle , Adobe etc are doin now.

Hope evrythin is clear..Send me in ur views. We had this doubt whn
discussin 'makin projects' by ilug. Now, i dont hear much of tht. Why???

Could such a problem (buffer overflow caused by a virus in a JPEG image) affect
a GNU system?
