dear ilug members

..Finally a usable (and no circular dependencies )
version of sarge - 8cds (total 14 cds ).. thanx to jj,
balakrishnan sir, liju ..

Just thought of sharing with u my experience..

well there were 8 cds.. but the total set has 14 cds i
suppose..

the installation is basically the same ncurses type..
but much more simpler.. as jj had stated in his
previous mail... there were only very few questions
asked...

the usual locale,keyboard,language,..partitioning..,
bootloader, etc.. sequence were followed

and thanks to good hardware detection.. (although not
as good as knoppix...) there were no modprobes and
insmods.. required... everything was automatic...

the base installation finished very quickly...

then as usual the ....cd adding process...

then finally i installed the most common packages..

there was slight problem .. with X server.. but i
modified the XF86config-4 and started up..
the display manager was gdm by default.. and its
marvellous..

here are some of the packages .. out the mindblowing
collection of packages::

webcam
totem
amule ,giftui (p2p)
gaim
firefox :-)
gnome 2.6
kde 3.2
apple,nintendo,atari,dos emulators

anjuta,glade,qt,screem,bluefish

geda (electronics)
fetchyahoo

cinepaint
blender
gimp 2
passerpotout
inkscape
3d desktop

these are some packages i found good..

anyway theres everything for everyone in sarge..

now theres also the open office quickstarter that
makes open office start so fast..

and of course "synaptic" a dream come true ..for
package management..instead of dselect..

on the whole sarge is stable..

apart from some gnome bugs..

since this is just the snapshot and the freezed
version will be all clear..

some user friendliness still missing..

is during the advaced configuration after the base
install..

i think the user should first be asked if advanced
conf. is required and then proceed...

else they get confused

also the number of cds being large i think a dvd is
best.. and

PCQUEST has brought out sarge on dvd in its december
issue..

---------------------------------------------------------------------
conclusion::

If you want a distro with all the latest ,stable
stuff.. with all the packages.. and with ofcourse
some limited eye candy and the sort... i think the
best choice is sarge..

so once again i think its debian all the way.. for me
and for you..

bye
