I found that I couldn't boot any 2.4 kernel both from the hard disk and from a Woody installation CD (No. 1) but could boot Sarge 2.6. I also had a similar experience with MEPIS (including 2.6). In every case (when I tried a 2.4) there was a kernel panic message. The problem appeared when I carried my computer a short distance in my car and has disappeared (I hope) after I transported it again! I am now running Sarge 2.4. I call it a hardware problem because even an attempt to reinstall Woody failed to start.
