hi

i thought i would also share my experience

i have a mailserver in my office which has around 300 local users. i installed
a backup server for this server in a new PC. i installed gentoo linux on the
mirrored disks and did some stress tests and it was just fine. because i am a
total noob in scripting, i installed webmin and tried to add these 300 users by
a batch file. it created the first 10 odd users and then gave error, saying no
such file or directory. webmin failed to create the home directories. it said
I/O error, i checked in the console for any disk read/writes it said I/O error.
i unmounted the partition and did a reiserfsck and it showed only one error and
it fixed it. thereafter it worked fine. but the same problem can be reproduced
by trying to add 10+ users from webmin. i did search google for this and found
nothing relevant. i ran iozone with default options in this server for hours
altogether and it completes that successfully. i did a smart test for each disk
and nothing came up in that also. both disk
s in the mirror are of the same make and model.

i have now given up on this, i am getting a new proliant ml-150 with h/w raid
for this server.

regards

bobby
