ok, grub will work fine without grub.conf, only thing it wont show you a menu. 
an example file will be there in /usr/share/doc/grub-<version>/<somefolder>. 
copy it to /boot and edit the way you want it to be.

i hope you remember we had a discussion on using amavisd for virus scanning 
quite some time back. there is a trick to speed it up quite a bit. mount the 
folder where it unpacks a mail in a ramdisk.
