Being a distro like Debian, I wouldn't want to install Firefox thru a tarball.
I'd go for an

    # aptitude install mozilla-firefox

But the version provided with "Sarge" (current stable) is 1.0.5 (correct me if
I'm wrong, I myself am an epiphany fan). Try adding a link to Debian Sid in
/etc/apt/sources.list or do it thru Synaptic (a loooot easier on part of
newbies).

Open Synaptic, include the Debian Sid link. Refresh the list. select
mozilla-firefox and install. Voila, you have Firefox.

If you insist on installing from a tarball, go to /usr/local/src. untar it
(don't forget to "su"). then run the install.bin or equivalent (I haven't tried
installing from a tarball for a loong time).

make sure the installation goes to /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/firefox-bin and
then add a symlink from /usr/local/bin to the original binary.

I currently don't have access to my box. Old timers correct me if they find
anything wrong.

No worries,
