First of all, I appreciate and congratulate on your decision to try out Linux
and learning it on your own.
Any modern GNU/Linux distribution can be installed seamlessly alongside Windows
(though people are not very sceptical of Vista). Modern GUIs (both GNOME and
KDE -- the competing, so-called desktop environments in GNU/Linux) are very
advanced and far surpass that of Windows XP; almost simiar to Mac OS X.
Its better that you find a local Unix guru to help you. Many a time, the
concepts are new and that you might do it with the help of an experienced hand.
Find and join any local Linux LUG (Linux Users Group). They are a bunch of
nice and helpful guys who are sure to get you through any troubles. They might
even lend you books (but don't keep your fingers crossed)!
A good starting point would be _The Linux Documentation Project_
[www.tldp.org]. They have plenty of resources to get any newbie started by.
Online magazines like the _Linux Journal_ [www.linuxjournal.com] or the _Linux
Gazette_ [www.linuxgazette.net]. They might have their archives which you can
search for previous posts/articles.
Be aware C/C++ programming in a *nix environment is very different from what
you've experienced till now. Fancy GUIs are scare, though not unavailable.
For deciding which "distribution" ('distro' in Linux lingo) to select, go to
distrowatch.com [http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major] and read the
reviews, finalize on one.
Best wishes for your future endeavours!
