Warm Greetings To The FOSS Community, The Meeting for the month of November was conducted successfully. The were 19 people who attended the meeting.
The meeting started of as usual with the Proposed Agenda "Free Operating Systems". The Presentation began with talking about Free Software and the Freedoms assosciated with it. Concept of Open Source software and the difference between the two were highlighted. The Operating Systems that were planned to be discussed was categorized into the two different sections. GPL Based Operating Systems GNU/ Linux GNU/ Hurd GNU/ Darwin FreeDOS ReactOS JNode Non GPL Based Operating Systems FreeBSD NetBSD OpenBSD Debian GNU/kFreeBSD AROS Each of the Operating Systems were discussed with respect to the following important sections: - History - Features - Adavtanges and Merits - License - Hardware Platforms Supported - Distributions or Derivatives of the Operating System The Audience was introduced to the different Operating Systems, it was a different experience for the attendees, many of whom had never used or heard of Operating Systems apart from GNU/Linux. The important features of Operating Systems were discussed. Several attendees showed interest in specific Operating Systems. During the tea break there was the customary round of introduction, which was followed by the Technical Presentation. "Introduction to Bash" was accepted well, although it just covered the fundamental aspects of the subject. The presentation comprised of : - Different kinds of Shells - Configuring the Bash Prompt - Customizing the Bash prompt with colors and other information After the presentation, One person who had arrived from Wayanad to attend the Meeting talked about his initiatives with regard to a Free Software Institute. He talked mainly about the need for documentation and training material in Malayalam for GNU/Linux. The Meeting concluded with the members telling what they got from the meeting, and what they plan to do immediately.
