Warm Greetings To The FOSS Community,

The Meeting for the month of March (23/03/2008) was conducted successfully. 
The were 23 people who attended the meeting, which gave way for great 
interactive sessions.

Date: 23-03-2008
Time: 2pm - 5.30pm
Venue: Internet Club, IInd Floor, AMI Trust Building, Broadway Enclave, 
Broadway, Ernakulam

The meeting started with the customary introduction after which the discussion 
started with the moderator giving a brief introduction to Free Software, the 
GNU Movement and Open Source Software. The concept of Software License and 
copyleft  was explained with relevance to the GNU GPL. With a few questions 
from the attendees the discussion was wound up.

The session shifted to the main agenda. The concept of File formats, Document 
Formats was initially discussed. The importance of an Open Document Format was 
discussed. An introduction to the OASIS ODF and the Microsoft OOXML was 
provided by the moderator.There was a brief discussion of the technical 
differences between the two.

The discussion mainly concentrated on the aspect of the Freedom required for 
Document Formats and how Open Formats will help the community and business. 
Several arguments were raised for and against the same. The interaction on the 
whole was very active and encouraging.

After the discussion the members moved on to have Tea.

After the tea break it was time for the technical session "Gimp in Daily Use" 
by Arun 

The objective of the Technical session was to create an awareness about the 
Basic Operations in GIMP and to make an impact that GIMP is not only mean for 
the top designers/Artists bust also for normal users.

The sessions dealt with the following important topics :

- History of GIMP
- How we can utilize GIMPs features in our day today activities :

       a) How to make your photos looks more attractive in a few clicks

       b) How to take, format, and prepare your own passport photos.

       c) How to change the background color of the photographs

The GIMP session was well received by all and provided the much needed 
encouragement to the attendees .

The concluding session discussed about the further activities of the attendees 
and listed out a few action items. The main focus was given on spreading 
awareness and educating people ( neighbourhood groups  ).

And hope the next meeting is bigger and better.
