I use Debian/Lenny on my Thinkpad. I had the same issue when I specify 'intel' driver (My display card is Intel mobile GM965) in xorg.conf As you told the live CD's were working perfectly, even with wrong driver setting in xorg.conf. The issue is resolved automatically when I get the latest 'xserver-xorg-video-intel' package.
